Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office announced Sunday. Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game on Saturday afternoon, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement reported by USA TODAY and Reuters. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced a stroke.

Murphy was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment, Herwitt said. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and his office is optimistic he will make a full recovery, she said. No further medical detail was released, and the office described the story as developing.

Murphy is not on Tuesday's midterm ballot. First elected to the House in 2006 and the Senate in 2012, he sits on the Appropriations Committee and has been one of his party's leading voices on immigration and on gun control and bipartisan firearm safety legislation dating back to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. Well wishes arrived Sunday from Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and from Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke in 2022 while campaigning for his own seat and now uses adaptive technology in the Senate.
