Brevard's Flooded Roads for the Drive Home: U.S. 192 Closed in Melbourne, Babcock, Dairy and Sarno Shut, and Standing Water Reported on I-95
All lanes of U.S. 192 are closed at Vine Street and Bronson Highway West in Melbourne, Melbourne police have shut Babcock Street at University Boulevard, all of Dairy Road, Lake Washington Road and Sarno Road near Eau Gallie, and Brevard Emergency Management reports standing water on portions of Interstate 95. With flash flood warnings running to mid-afternoon, the closures will outlast the rain.

The Space Coast's road map for the drive home is a closure list. Flooding has closed all lanes of U.S. 192 at Vine Street and Bronson Highway West in Melbourne, before Interstate 95, according to the Florida Department of Transportation as reported in the Palm Beach Post's live flood coverage. Inside Melbourne, police have closed Babcock Street at University Boulevard, all of Dairy Road and Lake Washington Road, and earlier closed Aurora Road in the area of Stewart Road; Sarno Road is closed near Eau Gallie Boulevard. Brevard Emergency Management has also reported standing water on portions of Interstate 95 — the county's main north-south artery — which means even the roads that are technically open are not moving normally.
Palm Bay's posture tells the same story from the driver's seat: the city issued a shelter-in-place about noon specifically because of significant roadway flooding throughout the city, and Brevard Emergency Management's standing guidance is to stay home and off the roads whenever possible — vehicles create a wake that can push floodwater into homes and yards, quite apart from the risk of stalling in water whose depth cannot be judged from the driver's seat. Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews spent the morning handling nearly a dozen calls for motorists stranded in rising water.
The timing offers no quick relief. The Weather Service's Brevard warnings run until 1:45 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Eastern in their different zones, with more rain possible inside them, and flooded roads reopen when the water recedes and crews can check them — not when a warning expires. For Orlando drivers with Space Coast business this afternoon, the working advice is the county's: postpone the trip if it can be postponed, never drive into water covering a roadway, and check FL511 before treating any Brevard route — U.S. 192, the beachline corridors or I-95 — as a through road.
