Monday's Flood Closures: A Westbound I-4 Lane Is Under Water in Osceola, U.S. 192 Is Closed in Brevard and State Road 78 Is Shut in Glades
The flood watch stopped being a forecast and became a closure list before the morning drive ended: the Florida Highway Patrol reports a flooded left lane on westbound I-4 at mile marker 59 near Kissimmee, FDOT reported all lanes of U.S. 192 closed in Brevard County at 4:12 a.m., and State Road 78 is closed in both directions in Glades County.

The closures arrived in the dark, in three counties at once. In Osceola County — the southern edge of the Orlando metro — the left lane of westbound I-4 is closed due to flooding at mile marker 59 near Kissimmee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol as reported in the USA TODAY Network-Florida live flood coverage at 7:24 a.m. Eastern. That is the Kissimmee end of Orlando's main artery, on the route theme-park and south-metro commuters use into the city, and a flooded left lane at drive time is a slow, spray-blind merge for everyone behind it.
East of Orlando, the Space Coast's surface roads fared worse. Flooding closed all lanes of U.S. 192 at Vine Street and Bronson Highway West, before Interstate 95 in Brevard County — a closure the Florida Department of Transportation reported at 4:12 a.m. Monday, according to the same live coverage. U.S. 192 is the east-west spine between Melbourne and the I-95 corridor; with all lanes closed, Brevard's morning cross-town traffic has no dry version of that road to take.
The third closure is the oldest. All lanes of State Road 78, in both directions, have been closed due to flooding in Glades County since Sunday afternoon, FDOT said — westbound at State Road 29 and eastbound at U.S. 27 — with a long signed detour running through State Road 80. None of these closures carries a reopening time in the reporting read this morning, and this desk invents none: the verified position at 7:27 a.m. Central is three flood closures standing, a flood watch running to 7 p.m., and a second wet drive home tonight for the whole region.
