UCF Opens Its Season Monday Against FGCU — With 11 New Knights, a Familiar Face at 24 Points a Game, and a Coach Signed Through 2029
The Knights tip the 2026-27 season at 7 p.m. Monday at Addition Financial Arena on ESPN+, their 11th straight home opener, off an NCAA Tournament return — and with a rebuilt roster whose leading newcomer, Dior Johnson, averaged 24.0 points a game last season and whose new defensive anchor won his award playing for FGCU.

UCF's basketball season starts Monday night at home, the way it has started for eleven straight years. The Knights host Florida Gulf Coast at Addition Financial Arena at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+, opening the 2026-27 campaign against a Florida opponent for just the second time in the Johnny Dawkins era — the other was FIU in 2023-24. UCF holds a 2-0 record in the series, and the teams meet for the second consecutive season.
Almost everything about the team taking the floor is new. The roster carries 11 newcomers — eight transfers and three true freshmen — against four returners, a rebuild built on production: the newcomers who played last season averaged 82.9 points per game among them. Dior Johnson, back at UCF after a season at Tarleton State, averaged 24.0 points a game there and was the Western Athletic Conference's Sixth Man of the Year. Cayden Vasko, from Wofford, ranked fifth in the entire NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.85. Lewis Walker averaged 18.9 points at North Carolina A&T. And in the opener's neatest twist, UCF's new defensive anchor, Isaiah Malone — the Atlantic Sun's Defensive Player of the Year last season, with 64 blocks — won that award playing for FGCU. He faces his old team in his first game as a Knight. FGCU, for its part, returns eight players and was picked fifth in the Atlantic Sun preseason poll.
The context is a program coming off a breakthrough: last season UCF reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018-19, earned an AP Top 25 ranking behind a win over No. 17 Kansas and four Quad 1 wins, and fell 75-71 to UCLA as a No. 10 seed in Philadelphia. Dawkins signed a three-year extension in the offseason that keeps him in Orlando through 2028-29. Monday's opener is the first test of whether the rebuilt roster can hold that level — and it shares the building's day with the UCF women, who also open at home Monday, against Florida A&M.
