Brevard County Closed Its Schools for Monday, Its Sheriff Asked People to Stay Home, and Kennedy Space Center Told Employees to Work From Home
The Space Coast answered Monday's flooding institutionally before the sun was up: Brevard County schools closed for the day, Sheriff Wayne Ivey asked residents to stay off the roadways in a Sunday-evening post, and NASA's Kennedy Space Center sent an emergency text alert Monday morning advising employees to avoid roads and work from home if possible.

On the Space Coast, Monday was cancelled before it started. Brevard County closed its schools for the day as torrential rain and flooding continued across the county, the Palm Beach Post's live flood coverage reports — a closure that keeps buses and family cars off roads that, in at least one verified case this morning, are closed outright by floodwater. A school closure on a flood day is not only about classrooms; it removes thousands of the morning's most predictable trips from a road network that officials were already asking everyone else to leave alone.
That ask came from the county's sheriff the night before. 'We ask that when possible please stay home and off of the roadways, unless necessary to travel to and from work or trying to escape an area of high flooding,' Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a social media post just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, as reported in the live coverage. 'Please avoid being out when possible and do not attempt to drive on a road that you cannot clearly see due to flooding or the potential for the roadway to be washed out,' he said. Police in several Brevard municipalities carried the same warning to their residents as the weather service issued an early-morning flash flood alert.
The county's largest employer followed on Monday morning. NASA's Kennedy Space Center sent out an emergency text alert advising employees to avoid roads and work from home if possible, the live coverage reported at 7:28 a.m. Eastern. Between the schools, the sheriff and the space center, Brevard's Monday is a county operating at minimum movement by design — which is the point. With the flood watch running into the evening and more rain forecast, the Space Coast's institutions have done the one thing that reliably prevents flood injuries: they have taken the trips off the roads before the water decides for anyone.
