More Than 2,000 People Opened the Horizon West Library — and the System's November Runs From a Book Sale to Colson Whitehead Tickets
The Orange County Library System's new 20,000-square-foot branch checked out more than 5,000 books on its grand-opening day; next up are the Friends book sale November 6-8, Whitehead tickets the same Friday, and a Lake Nona branch on the horizon.

Orange County's newest library opened to a crowd. More than 2,000 people came through the Horizon West Branch for its grand opening last month, the Orange County Library System said in its November director's message — a day of all-ages entertainment and programming at the 20,000-square-foot branch that checked out more than 5,000 books and signed up more than 270 people for new library cards.
The system is already pointing at its next map pin. With Horizon West open, the focus shifts to Lake Nona and the mobile library, the message said, with progress reports and grand-opening plans to come. In the meantime, November's calendar is anchored downtown: the Friends of the Orange County Library System's fall book sale runs Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8 at the Friends bookstore on the third floor of Orlando Public Library, with Friends members getting a preview night on Thursday, November 5.
The Friends also sponsor the system's signature author night. The Lillian Louise Pharr Author Series will bring Colson Whitehead — author of The Underground Railroad, The Nickel Boys and Harlem Shuffle — to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on January 28, 2027, and tickets go on sale Friday, November 6, the same day the book sale opens. The message also noted a newer perk: Blue Man Group has joined the Local Wanderer program, which lets cardholders check out performance tickets at no cost, with new tickets uploaded regularly.
